由于ROS的雙重作用,植物中的抗氧化防御系統維持細胞ROS穩態對植物至關重要。一方面,ROS作為信號分子調節植物生長發育,幫助植物適應脅迫條件。另一方面,當ROS濃度在脅迫下積累時,它們可能會對細胞代謝的有害影響。因此,植物擁有一個復雜的抗氧化系統,可以調節細胞內ROS產生和消除之間的平衡。
用于ROS清除的酶組分包括SOD、CAT、APX、GPX、MDHAR、DHAR、GST(谷胱甘肽鏈轉移酶)、GR(谷胱甘肽還原酶)和AOX。過氧化還原素(PRX)和硫氧還蛋白(TRX)也可以在金屬輔因子存在的情況下通過復雜的過程分解ROS,從而降低ROS水平。
